Whether you’re single or committed, I hope you all enjoyed at least one piece of chocolate on Valentine’s Day. The Hallmark holiday of romance calls for romantic tunes to set the mood, and what’s better than setting that mood with the new Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack!
Back in 2015, the first movie in the franchise gave us hits like ‘Worth It’ by The Weeknd which got up to number three on the Hot 100 list, and ‘Love Me Like You Do’ by Ellie Goulding, which was number one in 16 countries.
To put it bluntly, the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack was definite baby making music.
Fifty Shades Darker doesn’t disappoint either. With artists such as Zayn, Taylor Swift, Halsey, John Legend and lots more, this addition of new music brings out some of the catchiest music so far in 2017. Taylor Swift and Zayn kicked off the soundtrack with their single ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’ dropped in December, and has already climbed the charts at a rapid pace. The songs on the album are sexy and fun. Here are my two picks off of the album to start off this week’s selection of new music!
Bom Bidi Bom // Nick Jonas & Nicki Minaj
I’m just forewarning you all now: I am WEAK for Nick Jonas. I was obsessed with the Jonas Brothers back in their prime and shed a tear when they called it quits. Now, I gladly support Nick in his solo career and Joe in his new band, DNCE. I’m not really sure what happened to older brother Kevin, but I’m sure he’s fine wherever he is.
Needless to say, I was thrilled to find out that Nick Jonas would be featured on the soundtrack. His solo career has been great so far, so I was excited to hear what he brought to the table for Fifty Shades. Plus, Nicki Minaj is one of my favorite female artists. She’s wild and fun, and the two of them together was just amazing.
The song itself is just like the movie: sexy and steamy. It’s an automatic bop. When I walk to class, it’s the first song I play before walking out the door of my apartment. Nick Jonas always has a way of seductively crooning his way through his music, and Nicki Minaj adds her signature flare with her rap verse smacked into the middle of the song. It’s different from Zayn and Taylor Swift’s song, but in the best way.
The Scientist // Corinne Bailey Rae
Corinne Bailey Rae has always impressed me. One of my favorite songs from elementary/middle school was her song ‘Put Your Record On’. She has a beautiful voice, her sound is calm and inviting. Her rendition of Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’ takes on a haunting sound. It’s beautiful, and a perfect version of the song for the soundtrack.
A lot of other music released this week besides the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. It was a great week for music, and the world was yet again graced with the musical stylings of Katy Perry.
Chained to the Rhythm // Katy Perry
She performed ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ at the Grammy’s on Sunday. There was a definite political message behind her performance, when Perry yelled “No hate!” onstage.
Katy Perry has been missing from the music scene since her album ‘Prism’ dropped in 2014. Her new single introduces the new sound of her next addition to the industry. The song itself is groovy with heavy tones, makes everyone think of a typical 80s throwback song.
The song also features Skip Marley, reggae’s new rising star. If you think his last name sounds familiar, then you’re correct. He’s the grandson of the famous Bob Marley. It’s no wonder he’s rising up in the music world!
Unholy War // Jacob Banks
This song is a definite favorite of mine from this week. It starts off with a heavy, jazzy piano tune, leading into a slow R&B/Soul mix followed by Banks’ powerful vocals. The song gives off apocalyptic vibes and would sound perfect in The Walking Dead or any of those new-age, end of the world movies. It’s a modern twist on an old genre of music.
I’m going to start ending my posts with a song of the week. It can be any song I want, old or new, just depending on my mood and what I feel like listening to that week!
My Song of the Week this week is: Aloha by MOME
Until next week, music lovers!
