Unlike last week, I am really looking forward to the most recent week’s crop of new music. A lot of artists came forward with some awesome hits, so here are some of the highlights I’ve chosen!
Sign of the Times // Harry Styles
I have been looking forward to hearing Harry Styles’ upcoming solo project for a while now. When it comes to singing, Styles has an amazing vocal range. He’s always had a voice tailored for slow jams; ones that remind me of Fleetwood Mac and Elton John. I knew his sound would be a lot different than his time in One Direction.
Both my sister and my best friend texted me when ‘Sign of Times’ released on Friday. When I finally listened to it after class, I was impressed beyond belief. Solo projects are either a hit or miss when bands split off, because the members are in bands for a reason. They can’t always stand alone. Harry definitely proved that statement wrong with his new song.
We all described the song with words like beautiful and gorgeous. The song is slow, just like I figured it would be. Harry doesn’t seem like the type to drop a pop song, although that’s all One Direction’s sound was.
The first lyrics to the song are, “just stop your crying it’s the sign of the times.” Well, too damn late, Styles!!!!
Physical // The Aces
I always love when an all-girl band comes on the scene. This world needs a lot more girl groups slaying the music industry. They don’t get nearly as much hype as a lot of all guy bands do.
Little Mix, a girl group from the UK, never ceases to amaze me with every song they release. It’s bop after bop with them, songs like Wings & Salute. Yet, there’s not nearly enough popularity for them. They even cancelled the U.S. leg of their world tour because they didn’t sell enough tickets at arenas all across the country. It’s disappointing because girl bands don’t sell as much as boy bands do. Preteens and teenagers know what they want, and most of the time it’s a group of cute boys singing about how beautiful girls are.
I can’t judge too strongly though, because I was a total fangirl when it came to boy bands like The Jonas Brothers and One Direction.
Hopefully The Aces can rise up against the odds. With their new song ‘Physical’, they sing about sex and sex positivity in ways like Beyoncé has done in the best of ways. It’s about wanting deeper relationships that don’t revolve around sex. Their sound is 80s pop retro, similar to another great girl band ‘HAIM’. The messages in their songs speak volume and the catchiness makes the listener pay attention to the lyrics as well as the sound.
Now or Never // Halsey
Halsey has this cool, smokey and dark vibe to her. Although my boyfriend can’t tell the difference between her and Lorde, I could pick her voice out of a crowd any day. She’s always has a soulful tune about her, and I loved her debut album ‘BADLANDS’.
‘Now or Never’ is an R&B soul jam, a lot more sensual than the sounds she showcased in ‘BADLANDS’. She strays away from mainstream sounds, taking her listeners to other worlds with her dreamlike songs. The closest thing she got to mainstream was being featured on Chainsmokers’ smash hit ‘Closer’. And we all know that song. It was inescapable for months on end. We all have to admit it though: we were hooked on that song for at least a week.
Her second album ‘Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’ drops on June 2nd of this year, and she hopes that although she doesn’t stick to the mainstream sound, people will still enjoy it.
Battle Cry // Jack White
The White Stripes got me through walking the hallways of high school. Jack White’s solo career is even better. Former frontman of The White Stripes, Jack White, dropped a surprise new tune for fans.
What I like about this song is that it has essentially no lyrics, just a few chants (or battle cries, haha) and a heavy rock beat.
Let Me Out (feat. Mavis Staples & Pusha T) // Gorillaz
Everyone has been waiting on Gorillaz’s new album for a long time now. ‘Feel Good Inc.’ was everyone’s feel good jam back in the early 2000s, and now their new song ‘Let Me Out’ is delivering even further.
The lyrics are sung by Pusha T and Mavis Staples, and they sing on a heavily dark instrumental tune. It’s one of the better songs put out by the band in years.
Their new album ‘Humanz’ is set out on April 28th.
Song of the Week: Numb & Getting Colder feat. Kučka – Baauer Remix // Flume
Until next week, music lovers!
