It’s a weird week of new music when I’m a fan of rap and country. It must be the weather, but let’s take a look and see what new music artists released this week!

Broken Halos // Chris Stapleton

This is the first single Stapleton has released from his upcoming album ‘From A Room: Volume 1’.  He premiered the new song during a benefit concert in December.

The song has a mid-tempo beat with a rock country vibe. There is a powerful message asking why some people have been taken from the world.

I like this song because it strays away from the typical country song about being cheated on and drinking beer in a bar in Tennessee. It has a powerful message about healing and I think some country artists could learn a thing or two from Chris Stapleton.

Biking (feat. JAY Z & Tyler The Creator) // Frank Ocean

I never understood the hype about Frank Ocean. Maybe it is because I was never a huge fan of rap music, but this song got me nodding along. It’s different than most rap music. The sound is different and now I’m sort of in love with Frank Ocean’s voice. With the help of JAY Z and Tyler The Creator, the artists create an amazing song.

JAY Z opens the song up with powerful lyrics comparing the wheel of a bicycle and life. Learning how to ride a bike is a rite of passage in life, it has to be done. All three artists get their fair share on the song, creating a mellow tune for listeners to enjoy.

LOYALTY (feat. Rihanna) // Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick has always impressed me. While he sounds like the typical rapper, his lyrics always gear listeners down a different path that doesn’t involve drinking and drugs.

His feature on Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ is arguably better than her original version, and once again he impressed me with his single ‘HUMBLE’. I can listen to that song five times in a row and still be hyped when it comes on the sixth time around.

His anticipated album ‘DAMN’ came with a lot of fire tracks, including a feature with Rihanna. ‘LOYAYLTY’ addresses honesty, and is radio-friendly.

(Kendrick is one of those artists where his music is nowhere to be found on YouTube. I highly suggest listening to LOYALTY and his full album elsewhere!)

Here are some other tunes I found this week!

Kissing Strangers (feat. Nicki Minaj) // DNCE

Joe Jonas is still successful like his brother Nick even after the Jonas Brothers split. Every single Joe’s band DNCE comes out with is unabashedly fun to dance and sing along to.

‘Kissing Strangers’ is no different. The band collabs with Nicki Minaj, who delivers a fire verse as always. It follows DNCE’s usual funky beat, featuring a catchy bassline and Minaj’s fast pace character voice like she does on her album ‘Pink Friday’.

DNCE hasn’t revealed if the song is part of a new upcoming album, but I can’t wait to see what they have in store next. The same goes for Nicki Minaj. She has featured on many songs this year and has released her own tunes as well, so when will there be a full album? I can’t wait!

Lights Out // Royal Blood

British Rock duos Royal Blood are releasing their new album ‘How Did We Get So Dark?” in June. To follow this release, they dropped a new single called ‘Lights Out’.

The song is fuzzy, full of deep bass, heavy drums and intense background vocals. It’s weird, but that is what I like about it. I tend to lean towards the unusual when it comes to music.
